The Dhaka Times Desk Egypt's first elected former president Mohamed Morsi has been buried in Cairo. The former Muslim Brotherhood leader was buried in East Cairo yesterday (Tuesday) in the presence of family members.
The 67-year-old former president appeared in court yesterday (Monday) to appear in the espionage case and died there. The case was filed over alleged ties to the Palestinian group Hamas.
Mohamed Morsi became president in 2012 following anti-government protests known as Egypt's 'Arab Spring'. He was the leader of the Muslim Brotherhood and the first democratically elected president of Egypt. But within a year, mass protests against him began and the army ousted Morsi from power.
It should be noted that he was imprisoned since then. After Morsi's ouster, Egyptian authorities launched a massive crackdown on his supporters and the Muslim Brotherhood. Abdel Fattah al-Sisi became the leader of Egypt after ousting Morsi. Sisi is currently the president of the country.
