Opposition parties are on strike

The Dhaka Times Desk Morning and evening general hartal called by Jamaat-e-Islami and Ganajagran Manch has started.

In protest against the government's continuous killings, terrorism, mass arrests, mass torture and the demand for the release of former Ameer of Jamaat Prof. Ghulam Azam, a countrywide morning-evening hartal program was announced. After that, a hartal was called today from the Gana Jagran Manch of Shahbagh as the maximum punishment for Ghulam Azam was not death sentence. Today's hartal is the hartal of both parties.

It is to be noted that on the day of the announcement of Ghulam Azam's verdict in the International Court of Justice, the Jamaat called a morning-evening hartal across the country on Monday. After the announcement on Sunday afternoon, the day before the hartal, they started vandalism across the capital.

On Monday morning-evening nationwide strike called by the party led to widespread clashes and violence in several districts. At least five people were killed. Among them, a leader of Awami League was beaten to death in Satkhira by the hartal-supporting Jamaat-Shibir workers.

On the other hand, in Chapainawabganj Sadar and Shibganj, two activists of Jamaat and Shibir were killed in clashes between hartal-supporters and law enforcement forces. A Deputy Commander of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), at least 15 members of the law enforcement force, including the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the police station were injured. 2 workers of the camp were killed in a 'mass beating' during the road blockade in Mirpur, Kushtia.

The International Criminal Tribunal-1 on Monday ordered a total of 90 years or life imprisonment for Jamaat-e-Islami's Amir Ghulam Azam during the Liberation War of Bangladesh on five counts of war crimes. Rejecting this verdict, Ganajagran Manch, agitating for the highest punishment (hanging) of war criminals, has called a strike to demand the death sentence of Ghulam Azam. The organization said that the Ganajagran Manch workers will stand at 20 points in Dhaka on Tuesday's strike. Ganajagran chattura of Shahbagh will be considered as the main point.
