“Half Life” resurrected the first-person shooter by injecting it with much-needed realism, a strong story and a memorable hero by Gurdon Freeman. The powerful combination made it hugely successful and is widely regarded as one of the best games of all time. The love affair continued with Half-Life 2, released in November 2004, which introduced a detailed world with realistic physics where players could exploit the game's gravity gun to solve puzzles or defeat enemies. It is very regularly at the top of the best games list.
Valve has released additional episodes for Half-Life 2 but those who cut their gaming teeth on the two titles have been eagerly awaiting the third installment. Online, every hint about HL3 that has surfaced over the past 15 years has been dissected and picked apart by fans. About Half Life 3, Ars Technica reported that it will be set after the first game and before the second. One is a sequel and the other is a prequel.
Half Life: Alex is an entirely new game that will be playable only through virtual reality, and Valve helped develop the Vive VR headset with HTC, but it says the game will also work on Oculus Rift and Windows mixed reality VR systems. As the name suggests, the game will focus on Alex Vance – one of the main characters of Half-Life 2. The original game introduced an alien technological superpower called the Combine that was once unleashed on Earth by Gordon Freeman and conquered the planet hours later. Alex's father, Dr. Eli Vance, heads the resistance in the fight against the combine's male control, so it's reasonable to assume that the game will deal with the early days of Fightback.
Valve has a history of pushing the boundaries of PC gaming and Half-Life: Alex continues that trend. Also, Valve has a vested interest in getting people to try and buy Vive headsets. The basic Vive model costs £499 in the UK, $399 in the US and higher-end models in the range cost much more.
That high starting price for VR gaming is only really dedicated, old fans have tried it. Also, there have been many titles of games available to play in VR that can also be played on a flat screen. If Valve manages to make Half-Life: IHS Markit industry analyst Piers Harding-Rolls says Alex is an immersive VR experience that exploits the technology's potential, meaning new gamers can try it out. He also explained that the Half-Life VR game will definitely increase consumer interest and awareness of the technology and thereby increase sales of PC-based VR headsets.
Good question. While the world of gaming has moved on a lot since HL1 and 2, Valve is still dominant for the Steve Gaming platform and other titles like Counter Strike, Team Fortress 2, Dota 2, Left 4 Dead and Portal. But players' attention is now divided between larger multiplayer games like Fortnite, League of Legends, Apex Legends, Call of Duty, Overwatch and many others that are making an impact in almost all countries at the same rate. It's also important to note that for many of these people, the arrival of Half-Life: Alix may be too late to tempt them to don the headset and accept the Combine.
