Northbrook Hall, now locally known as Lalkuthi, is one of the oldest and most beautiful architectural monuments in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, located at Wise Ghat on the banks of the Buriganga River.
In 1874, Governor General of India George Baring Northbrook visited Dhaka. This building was built as a town hall to commemorate his visit. There is also a theatre. At that time the local rich people of the capital Dhaka named this building Northbrook Hall in honor of Governor General Northbrook.
It is known that on February 8, 1926, the world poet Rabindranath Tagore was welcomed here by the Dhaka Municipality. Currently the building is under the responsibility of Dhaka City Corporation. It is not currently used as an auditorium as it is dilapidated. The road adjacent to this building is known as Northbrook Hall Road. There is also a library at the rear of the main building.
