Citing doctors engaged in the treatment of corona patients, a group of researchers from Shanghai in China and New York in the United States said that the cells of the human body that are capable of killing the virus, the new corona virus, on the contrary, is killing them more.
In other words, the corona virus has a major impact on the human immune system, as seen in the case of the HIV virus responsible for AIDS.
Lu Lu, a researcher at Fudan University in Shanghai, and Zhang Shibo, a researcher at the New York Blood Center, conducted this study jointly, the South China Morning Post reported.
The researchers tested the behavior of the SARS-CoV-2 virus with lab-grown T-lymphocyte (T-cell) cells.
This is because T-cells play a major role in identifying and eliminating any harmful virus that enters the body.
The researchers first identified a virus-infected cell. Then a hole was made in the cell membrane and a toxic chemical was injected into it. It turned out that the toxic chemical killed both the virus and the cell and essentially disintegrated them.
The researchers were surprised to find that the T-cell became an easy prey for the corona virus. They found a structure in the spike protein of the virus that caused fusion between the viral envelope and cell membrane shortly after exposure.
The virus's genes then enter and take up residence in T-cells. Thus it essentially renders the human immune system ineffective.
The researchers also performed this test on another coronavirus, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). However, the Sars virus appears to lack the ability to attack T-cells.
It is reported that this research report was published this week in the peer-reviewed journal Cellular and Molecular Immunology.
A doctor treating corona patients at a Beijing government hospital said, 'What the new research tells us is that another deadly and powerful virus that directly attacks the human immune system has been discovered.
So we have no other option but to be extremely cautious about the new corona virus and continue to do a lot of research, researchers said.
