According to international media reports, such a decision is being made as part of the human rights reforms of Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz and his son Mohammed bin Salman.
The Saudi authorities have been widely criticized for the murder of prominent journalist Jamal Khashoggi, including the repression of dissidents. Critics claim that Saudi Arabia has the worst human rights record.
The last incident of flogging in the country was also publicized in the international media in 2015. Blogger Rafi Badawi was then publicly flogged.
Blogger Rafi was charged with defamation of Islam and cybercrime. After being found guilty, he was sentenced to be whipped 1,000 times.
