Power supply disrupted in Ampan's Chhobal

The Dhaka Times Desk The power distribution system in the southern and northern parts of the country has been affected by Cyclone 'Ampan'. About 200 million customers were without electricity for a long time.

Due to the storm, power supply was disrupted in other parts of the country including the capital. Power supply has resumed in most areas till Thursday evening, but power supply is still not normal in many coastal and northern districts. As of writing this report, about one crore customers were without electricity. It is feared that 6 million customers will remain without electricity.

According to preliminary estimates, distribution companies have also suffered a loss of Rs 30 to 35 crore due to the storm. Its amount is expected to increase further. Around 2500 electric poles have been damaged across the country in Ampan. 5,500 polls have fallen on it. 7 to 8 thousand km of lines have been damaged due to fallen trees. About 900 transformers were damaged. 20,000 to 25,000 meters have been damaged.

In normal time, the electricity demand in this season is 10000 MW, but due to Ampan, it dropped to 2500 MW on Wednesday night. Despite the repair of the distribution system, the demand did not cross 5,000 MW on Thursday evening.

It is to be noted that due to Cyclone Ampan, extensive crop damage has been caused in the southern and northern parts of the country. Many houses were destroyed. So far 16 deaths have been reported.
