These locusts usually live in the desert areas of Saudi Arabia. Since the onset of monsoon, they started moving towards India, i.e. towards north. reaches the Red Sea region. Rainfall in this region becomes favorable for their breeding and habitat. Then locusts crossed the Red Sea and entered Pakistan. It entered India directly from Pakistan through Rajasthan. The states of western and central India face a small number of locust attacks almost every year. However, a large number of locusts have attacked India this year. Meteorologists said rains have started earlier in the region including Rajasthan. Because of this, this insect attacked in large numbers this year after getting a favorable environment.
Locusts are a group of insects. This insect is a species of small horned grasshopper. Although they cannot change color like chameleons, these locusts have the strange ability to change their character according to the weather. A swarm of locusts can range from one square kilometer to hundreds of square kilometers. A swarm can contain 40 to 80 million moths. If the weather and wind flow are favourable, these squadrons can cover up to 150 kilometers per day.
Although field crops are the main food, they also eat various grains and fruits. According to the FAO, these insects can easily eat their own weight in food every day. Each moth weighs about 2 grams. A group of locusts can eat the food of an entire village in one day. But there is only one hope, this insect army has attacked long ago. There is no special crop in the field at this time. The farmers have taken the rabi seeds home. Cultivation of Kharip season crops has not started yet. There are mainly vegetables and fruits in the field.
There is no way to completely eradicate swarming locusts. But a loud noise can cause a slight movement from a place. Pesticides can be applied to cultivated land. According to the country's Central Department of Agriculture, farmers can use pesticides like malathion, fenvalerate, quinalfos to eradicate it. Farmers in Madhya Pradesh's Jabalpur are also preparing to spray chemicals and water again.
