The two accused owned a restaurant called Limegate Infinity Sea-Food. Last year, the restaurant started selling a variety of food vouchers against advance payment online. As the price of food in these vouchers is lower than the prevailing price in the market, many customers also collect them.
A voucher for seafood for 10 people is priced at 880 baht ($28), which is much lower than the usual price. That is why 20,000 customers bought vouchers worth 5 million baht ($1.6 million), according to the country's media.
In the beginning, many of the voucher buyers went to the restaurant to eat. However, the long waiting list indicated that the process would take several months. However, in March this year, the management company, Limegate Infinity, announced the closure of the restaurant, saying that they could not keep enough seafood in stock to meet the demand.
The rest of the voucher buyers offered to pay and 375 of the 818 customers who complained were given refunds. The rest who did not get their money back sued Limegate Infinity and its two owners, alleging fraud. After hundreds of such cases, the police arrested them.
The court found them guilty on 723 different charges and both of them were sentenced to 1446 years in prison. However, as they pleaded guilty, the court halved their sentence to 723 years.
According to the law of Thailand, they are imprisoned for 723 years, but they have to be imprisoned for a maximum of twenty years. Because under Thai law, the maximum prison term for defrauding the public is twenty years. Previously, a Thai court sentenced a fraudster to 13,000 years in prison in 2017.
