At the end of 2019, the total number of refugees was 79.5 million. This information is given in the global report published by the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) on the occasion of World Refugee Day.
The report also states that the total number of refugees in the world as of December 31, 2018 was 78 million. As a result, the number of refugees increased by 87 lakhs in one year. A circular sent from UNHCR's Dhaka office summarizes the report.
According to UNHCR's annual Global Trends Report, 79.5 million people were displaced around the world at the end of 2019. Never before in history have so many people been homeless. At the same time, the current picture of the refugee crisis in the world shows that the hope of a quick end to the plight of the refugees is diminishing day by day. In the 1990s, an average of 1.5 million people could return to their country through repatriation every year. This number has decreased to 390 thousand in the current decade. This proves that a permanent solution to the refugee crisis is becoming increasingly complex.
In that report, detailing the refugee crisis, it is said that out of 7 crore 95 lakh people, 4 crore 57 lakh have been displaced within their own country. On the other hand, the rest have been forced to leave the country, including 2.96 million refugees and 4.2 million people who have applied for asylum in another country and are awaiting the results.
It also says that more children are currently displaced than the combined population of Australia, Denmark and Mongolia. Their number is about 3 crores out of 3 crores and 40 lakhs, out of which lakhs of children are again without guardians. Moreover, the amount of forced displacement has almost doubled in the last 10 years (from 40 million in 2010 to 795 million in 2010). 80 percent of the displaced people are in countries with severe food shortages and malnutrition. Many of these countries are also vulnerable to climate and natural disasters. More than three-quarters of the world's refugees (77 percent) are stuck in protracted crises. For example, Afghanistan crisis is currently in its fifth decade. On average, more than 8 out of every 10 refugees (85 percent) are currently in developing countries. They usually take refuge in neighboring countries.
The report points to two main reasons for the gradual increase in the number of refugees. The first is a variety of new displacement events—particularly the conflicts in the People's Republic of Congo, the Sahel region of West Africa, Yemen, and Syria. In conflict-ridden Africa, 13.2 million refugees, asylum seekers or internally displaced persons have been displaced in the last 9 years. This number is 1 in 6 of global displacement.
The second reason is the detailed information obtained over the past year about the situation of Venezuelans living outside their country. Many of them are not legally registered as refugees or asylum seekers, but they are also in need of protection and assistance.
The High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, said of the report, 'The changed reality today has not only increased the number of forced displacements, but in most cases the problems are more long-term. It is unacceptable that these people spend years in uncertainty without any hope of repatriation to their own country or building a future somewhere new. Refugees require a completely new and liberal approach. Resolving the years of conflict at the root of their suffering requires conviction.'
