These monkeys are quite addicted to junk food. They are very fond of bananas offered by tourists. These groups of monkeys have become ferocious for food due to the closure of tourists due to the corona virus.
Residents of Lopburi wear nets on their heads as a protection against monkey attacks. Kuljira Taichawatanawanna, a resident, said, 'We live in cages and the monkeys are outside. Their excrement is scattered everywhere. When it rains, the smell becomes unbearable.' The Kulji community lived in this thirteenth century city.
Last March, a video footage of a group of monkeys fighting over food on the street went viral on social media. According to local residents, the number of monkeys has doubled to 6,000 in three years.
Due to which their violence has now reached an unbearable level. An abandoned cinema in the city is now the headquarters of the monkeys. A nearby shop owner also kept toys of tigers and crocodiles to scare the monkeys. It also doesn't work. Every day a gang of monkeys steals food from his shop.
The residents of the city are fed up with the rampage of the monkeys. The more the monkeys eat, the more energy they have, said Pramat Ketampai, who manages the temples around the Prang Sam Yod temple.
So they reproduce more.' That's why Thailand's Lopburi Province has taken the initiative of permanent birth control of monkeys.
A local veterinary surgeon named Supkaran said, 'They became aggressive as soon as the tourists left. They are fighting with people for food to survive. They are also attacking buildings and forcing locals to flee their homes.
Because of this, permanent birth control measures, known as ligation or vasectomy, are being used to stop their reproduction.
However, the veterinary surgeon said, even with this, the number of monkeys will not decrease much. But the birth rate will decrease.
