The Dhaka Times Desk A launch sank today (Monday) in the Buriganga river near Farashganj-Shyambazar area of the capital. 30 dead bodies were recovered till 2 pm.
At around 10 am, the boat named Morning Bird with about 100 passengers was hit by a big launch and sank in the middle of Buriganga. Three units of fire service, coast guard and navy and army are carrying out rescue operations in search of missing persons.
Eyewitnesses said that the launch was hit by a large launch called Mayur-2 on the Dhaka-Chandpur route. At this time, several passengers managed to swim to the shore, but many are still missing.
Rozina Akhter, the duty officer of Fire Service, said that the small launch called Morning Bird was coming to Dhaka with passengers from Munshiganj's Kathpatti. It collided with Mayur-2 launch coming from Chandpur in Shyambazar area. Due to which the Morning Bird launch sinks.
Coast Guard headquarters media officer Lt. Commander Hayat Ibn Siddiq told a news media, '30 bodies have been recovered so far. Out of which, there are 23 men, 5 women and two children. Many are still missing.' The official said that rescue operations are still ongoing.
