মৃত্যুকালে তাঁর বয়স হয়েছিল ৭৭ বছর। বৃহস্পতিবার (৯ জুলাই) দিবাগত রাত ১১.২৫ মিনিটে তিনি ইন্তেকাল করেছেন। তার ব্যক্তিগত সহকারী মজিবুর রহমান গণমাধ্যমকে বিষয়টি নিশ্চিত করেন। সাহারা খাতুনের মৃত্যুতে রাষ্ট্রপতি ও প্রধানমন্ত্রী শোক জানিয়েছেন।
গত ২ জুন সাবেক স্বরাষ্ট্রমন্ত্রী এবং ঢাকা-১৮ আসনের সংসদ সদস্য অ্যাডভোকেট সাহারা খাতুন জ্বর, অ্যালার্জিসহ বার্ধক্যজনিত বিভিন্ন রোগে অসুস্থ অবস্থায় রাজধানীর ইউনাইটেড হাসপাতালে ভর্তি হয়েছিলেন। হাসপাতালে চিকিৎসাধীন অবস্থায় তাঁর অবস্থার অবনতি ঘটলে গত ১৯ জুন সকালে তাকে আইসিইউতে নেওয়া হয়। তারপর অবস্থার কিছুটা উন্নতি হলে গত ২২ জুন দুপুরে তাঁকে আইসিইউ হতে এইচডিইউতে (হাই ডিপেন্ডেন্সি ইউনিট) স্থানান্তর করা হয়। ২৬ জুন সকালে তার শারীরিক অবস্থার আবারও অবনতি ঘটে। তাঁকে আবারও নেওয়া হয় আইসিইউতে। এরপর তাঁকে গত সোমবার ৬ জুলাই অধিকতর উন্নত চিকিৎসার জন্য এয়ার অ্যাম্বুলেন্সেযোগে থাইল্যান্ডের ব্যাংককে বামরুনগ্রাদ হাসপাতালে ভর্তি করা হয়।
চিকিৎসাধীন থাকা অবস্থায় বামরুনগ্রাদ হাসপাতালে মারা যান। অ্যাডভোকেট সাহারা খাতুন গত তিন তিন বার ঢাকা-১৮ আসনের নির্বাচিত সংসদ সদস্য। ২০০৮ সালের নির্বাচনে আওয়ামী লীগ নেতৃত্বাধীন মহাজোট সরকার ক্ষমতায় আসার পর প্রথম স্বরাষ্ট্র ও পরে ডাক ও টেলিযোগাযোগ মন্ত্রীর দায়িত্ব পালন করেন।
