It is known that two generic versions of Remdesivir, Cipremi and Covifor, are in a heated debate over the skyrocketing prices. Cipla Pharmaceuticals and Hetero Labs, the manufacturers of these two drugs, have reduced the prices, but the price of a vial (100 mg) is between Rs 5,000 and Rs 6,000.
Mumbai's Glenmark Pharmaceuticals is going to reduce the price of Favipiravir brand Fabiflu in the race of this Corona drug competition.
Fabiflu, the generic version of anti-viral drug favipiravir, has been available in the Indian market since June. Glenmark said that one tablet of Faviflu will cost Rs 103.
It has been informed by the company that the price of the medicine is being reduced by 27 percent. Now a tablet of this brand of favipiravir will cost only Rs 75 (roughly Rs 85 in Bangladeshi currency).
Alok Malik, senior vice president of Glenmark Pharmaceuticals, said sales of favipiravir have been very profitable. This drug is also in demand in the Indian market. So it was decided to reduce the price. Favipiravir is manufactured by the Japanese company Fujifilm. The brand name of this drug in that country is 'Avigan'. However, this Mumbai based company, Glenmark, has made Fabiflu, the brand of faviravir. The main ingredients of this medicine are manufactured by Glenmark. There is no need to import any materials for making this medicine from abroad.
The senior vice president of the company said, 'We have brought the brand of that drug to the Indian market at a much lower price than the price of the brand of Favipiravir in other countries of the world. However, the decision to reduce the price has been taken. It is hoped that many people will be benefited if the price of these medicines is affordable.
Glenmark Pharmaceuticals started the experimental application of favipiravir in the Corona Solidarity Trial initiated by the Union Ministry of Health and the Indian Council of Medical Research. As the reports of the first two trials were satisfactory, the third phase trial of this drug was conducted. After seeing the report of that trial, the Indian Drug Control also gave permission to use the brand Fabiflu of Favipiravir in the treatment of Corona. The central drug controller said that favipiravir therapy can be used on an emergency basis only in patients with mild and moderate infections.
Glenn Saldanha, chairman and managing director of Glenmark Pharmaceuticals, said that Fabiflu is able to reduce the number of corona infections. As the number of patients is increasing, it is expected that the use of this drug will be somewhat slowed down.
