The Dhaka Times Desk India has officially handed over 10 broad gauge rail engines (locomotive) to Bangladesh as a gift. The Indian Railway Authority has handed over these 10 railway engines at the Darshana-Gede rail border.
Yesterday (July 27) through a virtual event, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of India. S. Jaishankar and the country's Minister of Railways, Industries and Commerce Piyush Goyal started the journey of 10 broad gauge rail locomotives to Bangladesh.
These railways have handed over the locomotives with the help of a grant from the Government of India. By handing them over, India fulfilled an important promise made by Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during her visit to India in October 2019. The railway engines have been suitably modified to suit the use of Bangladesh Railways from the Indian side. These rail locomotives will especially help in meeting the growing demand of passenger and freight trains in Bangladesh.
Foreign Minister of India Dr. Jaishankar also highlighted the depth of the black relationship between India and Bangladesh built on mutual trust and respect. Expressing satisfaction that the momentum of bilateral cooperation has not slowed down even in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic, he said that he expects to cross many more such milestones in the ongoing historic Mujib year.
Shri Piyush Goyal, Minister of Railways, Industries and Commerce highlighted the significance of this railway cooperation in enhancing bilateral trade and connectivity and further strengthening the economic partnership between the two countries.
India and Bangladesh have stepped up rail cooperation to mitigate the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic as trade has been disrupted through land borders in recent times. As a cost-effective and environment-friendly mode of transportation, railways have also facilitated cross-border transportation of goods. The month of June sees the highest number of freight trains between the two countries. A total of 103 freight trains have been used to carry essential products and raw materials.
Recently, parcel and container train services between India and Bangladesh have also been started. It is also expected that the possibility of bilateral trade will increase significantly.
Shri Angadi Suresh, Minister of State for Railways of India was also present on the occasion. Railway Minister on behalf of Bangladesh Government. Nurul Islam Sujan and Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen received the rail engines.
Railway Minister Nurul Islam Sujan said in this regard, "Indian Railways is giving 10 broad gauge rail engines as a gift. The Indian Railway Engines were handed over to the Bangladesh Railway Authority through video conferencing. All the formalities of this handover are observed at Gede border of India and Darsana border of Bangladesh.”
