In Barobazar of Kaliganj Upazila of Jhenaidah District, there is a spectacular Jora Bangla Mosque or Jora Dhibi Mosque with a dome.
The craftsmanship and architecture of this mosque is regarded as one of the hallmarks of Muslim civilization and excellence. It is believed that Shah Sultan Mahmud Jor, son of Alauddin Hussain Shah, founded the Bangla Mosque in 800 AH. The mosque is so named because of a pair of huts or a pair of ponds that existed in this place many years ago.
This square shaped mosque is built on a foundation of about 11 feet high with small thin bricks. The eastern side of the mosque has 3 arched entrances, 4 carved towers with 8 corners in the four corners and 3 semi-circular terracotta patterned arches on the western wall.
The central mihrab and the western side wall of this mosque are very interesting. Similarities are found in the style of construction of Jhor Bangla Mosque at Sarasnagar in Dumuria, Subharada Mosque at Abhaynagar and Bibi Kerani Mosque at Bagerhat.
There are also a few graves near the Jor Bangla Mosque and a pond called Andhpukur dug during the reign of Sultan Mahmud Shah to the north. The pond is dug to meet the ablution and drinking water needs of the Muslims. A few years after its construction, the Jor Bangla Mosque was covered by jungle.
This mosque was discovered in 1992-93 by the Directorate of Archeology of Bangladesh. Currently, several parts of the mosque are being renovated and rebuilt. Local Muslims now offer regular prayers in this mosque.
