The Dhaka Times Desk Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar are brutally tortured by the country's army. Two ex-army members of the country have admitted to this brutality.
The New York Times and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reported in a report that two soldiers named Myo Un Tun and Zaw Nang Tun defected from the Myanmar Army (also known as the Tatmadaw) last month.
They recounted in separate interviews that they had witnessed and participated in organized torture of the Rohingya. News Voice of America.
The two Myanmar soldiers described the horrific incident during the 2017 military campaign against Rohingya Muslims in the northern Rakhine state. The United Nations has labeled the incident as a 'genocide'.
Myo Un and Zhao Nang said they followed orders to shoot all Rohingya Muslims on sight, and that they saw young women and girls being raped by fellow soldiers.
The army burned village after village. That operation sparked one of the world's biggest refugee crises in recent times. More than 8 lakh Rohingya villagers crossed the border and sought refuge in Bangladesh.
The first recorded accounts of Myanmar soldiers were found to be similar to those given to UN human rights investigators.
Both of these narratives were recorded by the Arakan Army, a rebel group fighting the Myanmar Army. Fortify Rights, a Thai human rights watchdog, obtained the video. They also translated and analyzed the comments.
The two former soldiers are in the custody of the International Criminal Court in The Hague.
