On September 15, the Myanmar military said in a statement published by state media that it was "investigating large-scale abuses against the Rohingya".
Despite denying the Rohingya genocide since the beginning of the incident in 2017, this is the first time Myanmar has admitted to mass torture of the Rohingya. By doing this, it is believed that the ongoing trial against Myanmar in the Rohingya genocide in the international court will be more speedy.
Referring to a report published by the government in the statement, it is said that, 'Investigation of torture incidents during the period of 2016-17 will be conducted. The investigation also added to the allegations of torture in several villages in Maungdoo area.
Previously, an investigation commission of the Myanmar government also accused some of the country's army members of crimes against humanity in a report. However, Myanmar has been claiming for a long time that such an operation was carried out to prevent the activities of the Rohingya militant group in Rakhine State.
However, this was revealed at a time when two Myanmar soldiers were brought to The Hague in the Netherlands last week. Last July, the two soldiers admitted in a video that they were involved in the killing of villagers during the army operation in Rakhine.
It should be noted that in 2017, about 8 lakh Rohingyas took refuge in Bangladesh in the face of the torture of the army in Rakhine, Myanmar. Although the United Nations repeatedly commented that the incident of torture was a 'genocide' against the Rohingya, the country's army denied the allegations.
On August 25, 2017, the Myanmar military stepped up pre-planned and structured violence following attacks on several security posts in Rakhine.
According to Aljazeera news, about one million people of the Rohingya population of Arakan state fled to Bangladesh to escape from various types of violence and oppression, including killing and rape by the army. They are currently taking shelter in Teknaf shelter camp in Cox's Bazar.
