The Dhaka Times Desk Barbados no longer wants Queen Elizabeth II as head of state. Prime Minister Mia Motley wants to remove the British Queen from the post of head of state and remove the stigma of colonial rule in Barbados.
It is said that this decision of the government will be finalized on the 55th anniversary of independence from Britain next November.
Mia Motley made this announcement in a written statement recently. Buckingham Palace, the Queen's residence, also issued a statement saying that the matter rests with the government and people of Barbados.
According to a BBC news, the Governor General read out this written statement of the Prime Minister before the new session of the Parliament. A warning by Errol Barrow, the first Prime Minister after independence in 1966, is also mentioned. So that he said that, 'the country should not wander around in colonial circles.'
Following the Prime Minister's announcement, the country's Governor General Sandra Mason said that Barbados aims to complete the process of exiting the monarchy by 2021. 'It is now time to put the colonial past behind us completely.'
In a written statement, Prime Minister Mia Motley also said that Barbadians want a Barbadian as head of state.
The head of government, who was elected in 2018 as the first woman prime minister, also said, 'This is the ultimate statement of confidence in who we are and what we are capable of achieving.'
The island nation is not, of course, the first former British colony in the Caribbean to transition from a monarchy to a republic. Guyana achieved this status in 1970, less than four years after independence, and Trinidad and Tobago and Dominica followed suit in 1976 and 1978.
It should be noted that the Constitutional Review Commission also made a recommendation in 1998 for Barbados to attain republican status.
