The Dhaka Times Desk Despite Bangladesh's repeated requests on the Rohingya issue, India did not stand by Bangladesh. Rohingya problem South Block's vacillation was again seen in the meeting of foreign secretaries of India and Myanmar.
Earlier this week, Dhaka urged New Delhi to actively press for Myanmar to take back the 1 million Rohingya living in Bangladesh.
However, in the meeting of Foreign Secretary Harshvardhan Sringla and Myanmar Secretary U So Han yesterday, New Delhi did not raise the issue on the discussion table.
Development projects in Myanmar's Rakhine state were discussed between the secretaries of the two countries. There is also talk of building 15 schools there with the cooperation of India with Japan.
However, the statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi after the meeting did not mention the return of Rohingya refugees from Bangladesh's Cox's Bazar camp to Myanmar. When asked about the matter, the spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, Anurag Srivastava, said that, 'Here the development program of Rakhine State was discussed.'
A joint statement issued after the recent Foreign Ministerial (JCC) meeting of India and Bangladesh said that both the ministers of the two countries highlighted the importance of the speedy, safe and permanent return of the Rohingyas who were forcibly expelled.
During the meeting, Bangladesh Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen told Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar that Dhaka hopes that India, as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, will play a meaningful role in the issue of repatriation of Rohingyas from Bangladesh to Myanmar.
