The Dhaka Times Desk The United Nations has expressed deep concern over the recent spate of rapes and growing tolerance against women in Bangladesh.
This concern has been expressed in a statement sent from the United Nations Mission in Dhaka yesterday (Wednesday). The statement said that these are serious crimes and grave violations of human rights. The incident of violence against women in Noakhali, which went viral through social media, highlights the social, behavioral and structural misogyny.
It also says that the United Nations stands with the common people and civil society in their demand for justice. However, we feel that the Noakhali incident once again proves that this is not an isolated incident. Rather, it is a specific call for systemic reform. We are taking a strong stand for systemic reforms, protecting and strengthening women's rights. The United Nations is always ready to assist the Government in designing and developing gender-sensitive justice systems and in comprehensive re-evaluation of methods of handling cases of violence against women and children.
The United Nations also advocates urgent reform of the criminal justice system to provide support and protection to victims and witnesses, and speed up trials. Also, there is no alternative to ensure transparency and accountability in answering how numerous laws and action plans are being implemented to protect women and girls.
The UN is also working with all its partners to strengthen institutional mechanisms by identifying gender inequality and patriarchal social policies through various programmes. The organization works to build a society where women and girls feel safe and progress towards development.
Citing alarming global statistics, the statement added, "We find that violence against women is the most widespread of all crimes, yet the least punished." Everyone must stand against it.
