For the first time in the country, International Standard Book Number (International Standard Book Number: ISBN) is being provided digitally. It is being provided by the Department of Archives and Libraries through mobile operator Teletalk. However, no information about these number books is available on the internet. Authorities say it will take some time to reap the benefits of the new digitally delivered ISBN.
The ISBN system is a unique numbering system for barcode identification of any type of book. This number is considered the standard for identifying all books in the world. ISBN number is important for book keeping, worldwide recognition, convenience in selling the book, sale of the book in other countries, inclusion in national catalogs, accurate bibliographic information, avoiding errors as it is machine-readable.
Until now, the Department of Archives and Libraries of the Ministry of Culture used to create and provide ISBN manuals of the books published by various publications of our country. Searching the internet with these numbers did not yield any information. This company has been providing ISBN digitally through Teletalk since the end of last year.
Due to Corona, the book was not published throughout 2020, so its effectiveness was not observed as well. However, a lot of ISBN numbers are also being made available digitally from now on, in the run up to the Ekushey Book Fair next year. However, no information was found on the books given in these numbers on the internet.
In this regard, Jamal Uddin, Deputy Director of Archives and Libraries Department, told a news media, "We have been working day and night on this issue. New problems are coming up, we are solving them. Discussions with Google will be held soon.
Currently it is possible to collect ISBN digitally through isbn.teletalk.com.bd. In this case ISBN can be obtained by applying in three categories - publisher, author and book. It is given within 24 hours of application. Each costs only 56 rupees.
Almost all the authors-publishers of the country have been publishing books by collecting ISBN numbers. There is also a barcode containing the 13-digit ISBN on the back of the book cover or sometimes on the front page of the book. The first part of the number is the prefix. And the second is the country code. The third is the publisher code. The fourth is the item number code and the last is the check digit.
