The Dhaka Times Desk To each his own religion. No one has any restrictions on practicing religion. Therefore, a mosque and a temple have been built in one place!
A mosque and temple located in a courtyard near the old market of Lalmonirhat town. Here, the mosque and Kalibari Durga temple stand side by side for Muslims to pray. The walls of the two structures are almost adjacent. This is a shining example of religious harmony.
After the sweet Azan in the voice of the Muezzin at Fajr in the morning, the worshipers prayed and left. After a while heard in the temple Uludhvani! Along with that, the ceremony of puja-archana goes on. This century-old mosque and temple bear unique signs of such communal harmony.
Muhammad Shafiqul Islam, the muezzin of the mosque, told the media, 'We have two religious institutions in the same courtyard. Here Muslims and Hindus are practicing their respective religions properly. We are praying, and they are worshiping. No one is interfering in anyone's religion. There is no conflict between us regarding the observance of religious rituals.'
Senior journalist and 71-year-old guerrilla commander SM Shafiqul Islam Kanu said, 'Kali temple was established here before Durga temple was established in 1836. That's why Puran Bazar is known as Kalibari to many people. Then a prayer house was constructed in 1900 in the temple premises. The prayer house later came to be known as Puran Bazar Jame Masjid.
Everyone should come here to see what religious harmony really is, what religious harmony is or what it should be. Sanjay Kumar Chakraborty, the priest of the temple told the media, 'Pujarchana is regularly held in the temple. The use of musical instruments is prohibited during Azan and Namaz. We have never been in a situation where religious harmony could be disturbed. Rather, I have been getting the support of local worshippers.'
Seeing such religious harmony, residents of both religions feel proud of it. Everyone performs religious rituals together. So two religious institutions in the same courtyard is seen as an example.
