Professor Tong Yigang of Beijing University of Chemical Technology led the research. The results of the study were published in the journal 'Biorexiv.org' last Friday. The researchers said they found evidence that most live viruses are killed in mother's breast milk and the entry of the virus is also blocked.
The research team said that their findings support the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO). WHO also recommends that mothers with suspected or confirmed Covid-19 continue to breastfeed their babies.
For this study, human lung and tissue cells were exposed to the Sars-Cov-2 virus. This involves mixing healthy cells with breast milk and then exposing the purified milk to the virus. This showed that the virus could not bind to or enter most cells. Although able to enter, the viruses were not able to replicate themselves at all.
Research shows that breast milk is capable of suppressing other viruses like the coronavirus and bacteria as well as the coronavirus.
'SARS-Cov-2 can infect (cells) and this infection can be suppressed by breast milk. This milk also has anti-SARS-Cov-2 activity,' said the study.
The same research team found in an earlier study that breast milk also prevented the infection of the coronavirus in animal kidney cells.
