According to a report by the British media BBC, NASA scientists have also presented evidence related to this in two separate research papers published in Nature Astronomy.
Until now, it was thought that the moon could have a small amount of water. New research suggests that much more water has been found on the satellite than previously thought.
NASA Director Jim Bridenstine said, 'We still don't know how we will use this resource', but this clear discovery of the existence of molecular water will facilitate future missions to the Moon and deeper space exploration. Now scientists aim to trap water reservoirs in the moon's natural materials.
Previous studies have suggested that water exists only in craters on the dark side of the moon. In the latest discovery, scientists claim that molecular water exists on the moon's sunlit surface as well.
Team member Casey Hannibal, a postdoctoral fellow at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, also presented a hypothesis for the moon's abundance of water in a virtual teleconference. He says that 'every cubic meter of lunar soil may contain on average about a 12-ounce bottle of water.'
In this regard, the director of NASA's Human Exploration Directorate, Jacob Bleacher, said that scientists need to better understand the nature of this reservoir of water on the lunar surface. Because of this, it will be easy to know how much easier these waters will be for future lunar explorers to use.
