And no heat is required to do this. Recently, a group of Australian scientists reported such success. The American media CNN reported that the team consisting of researchers from the Australian National University and RMIT University of Melbourne has discovered this completely new method of making synthetic diamonds. In this method, by applying pressure equal to the weight of 640 African elephants on the carbon powder, the carbon powder becomes diamond. The diamond produced in this new method can be used in jewelry and industry for various purposes, the researchers said.
The idea of synthetic diamond is not the first time. Since the 1940s, synthetic diamonds have been produced by various methods. Diamonds were created artificially by burning carbon at very high temperatures for a long time. This new method uses almost no heat energy. Along with that, the time has also reduced from a few hours to a few minutes. Therefore, it is believed that the prices of synthetic diamonds may come down further in the coming days.
It should be noted that natural diamonds are usually found at a depth of 150 km from the ground. Over hundreds of billions of years, carbon burned underground at temperatures of thousands of degrees Celsius to turn into diamonds. Because of this, natural diamonds are rarer and more expensive.
