Reporters Without Borders (RSF) reports that the death toll is indicative of an increase in the number of investigative reporters being targeted on organized crime, corruption and environmental issues. In an annual report, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) said that 84 percent of journalists killed this year were intentionally targeted. It was 63 percent in the previous year.
Pauline Addis-Mevel, the organization's editor-in-chief, said that over the past few years, Reporters Without Borders has found that investigative journalists are the most at risk. They are becoming targets of the state and various circles.
This year, the highest number of journalists, 8, were killed in Mexico. The organization also noted that there has been no trial for the murder of journalists in the South American country.
5 journalists were also killed in war-torn Afghanistan. Despite the ongoing peace talks between the government and the Taliban, journalists have become the targets of attacks.
