The news agency Reuters reported in a report that the name of the boy weighing 7 kg is Fayed Samim. He is severely malnourished and paralyzed, curled up in a bed at Al Sabeen Hospital in the capital, Sana'ar, where he was admitted on January 3.
Dr. Raje Mohammad, Superintendent of the Malnutrition Ward at the hospital, said, “When he was brought, he was in almost terminal condition, but thank God we were able to do what was needed and his condition is also improving. He suffers from cerebral palsy (CP) and severe malnutrition.”
Fayed admitted to the hospital weighs only 7 kg. The situation is such that her fragile little body can only be covered with a quarter of a folded hospital blanket! His family brought him from Al Jawf, 170 kilometers north of Sana'a. They had to cross many checkpoints and damaged roads while en route.
As Fayed's family cannot afford the treatment and medicines, they have to depend on donations for his treatment. Such cases of malnutrition are increasing day by day and poor parents are forced to rely on the kindness of strangers or international aid to treat their children.
The Saudi-imposed war has left 80 percent of Yemen's population dependent on aid. The United Nations is calling the situation one of the world's biggest humanitarian crises. Yet Yemen has not officially declared a famine situation.
It should be noted that at the end of 2018, the relief flow to the country increased due to the warning of the imminent famine of the United Nations. However, the country's food crisis has become more worrisome as relief flows have dwindled in 2020 due to coronavirus restrictions, reduced remittances, locusts, floods and insufficient funds.
