His government resigned after allegations of fraud in child welfare funds surfaced. After announcing his resignation on Friday, he did not use the government vehicle or any private vehicle.
According to the data of the tax officials, between 2012 and 2019, the authorities filed fraud charges against the child welfare fund against about 26,000 families. Due to which those families have to return the money. Many families are in trouble. Victims lose their homes and even divorce. Even a small mistake in filling the form has resulted in many families, a large proportion of whom are immigrants. Many of them faced extra scrutiny just for having dual citizenship.
An emergency cabinet meeting was convened in The Hague on Friday amid criticism over the matter. From that meeting, the government led by Prime Minister Mark Root unanimously decided to resign. Accordingly, Prime Minister Mark Rutte officially submitted his resignation letter to the King.
Resigned Prime Minister Mark Rutte has announced that the current administration will continue to serve as an interim until the new government takes office through elections on March 17.
