According to the information obtained from recent research, the rotation speed of the earth has increased relatively over the past few years. According to scientists, the shortest number of days in 2020 was a total of 28. This is considered to be the lowest number of days since 1960.
On the other hand, scientists have given more sensational data that the days may be even shorter in 2021. According to time and date, the Earth rotates once every 86,400 seconds on average around the Sun, which is equal to 24 hours or one half solar day.
Scientists estimate that the average day in 2021 will be 0.05 milliseconds shorter than the 86,400 seconds. Earth takes 23 hours 59 minutes 59.9998927 seconds to rotate once on its own axis. As a result, 2021 will be 19 milliseconds shorter than a normal year, which is about 0.5 milliseconds shorter per day on average.
This discrepancy in time is not new. A 'leap second' is also added in some years to compensate for the fall time variation. Since the discovery of the molecular clock in the 1960s, 27 such 'leap seconds' have been added. The last time 'Leap Second' was added was in 2016.
Research suggests that since then the Earth has been spinning faster than its normal rotation speed. So scientists have also suggested the formulation of 'Negative Leap Second' to restore parity.
