The Dhaka Times Desk Israel showed surprise by successfully transplanting artificial cornea for the first time in the world. On January 11, the world's first artificial cornea was transplanted at the country's Bellingson Hospital.
Professor Irit Bahar, head of the country's ophthalmology department, performed the surgery. Through this, a 78-year-old Israeli citizen regained his eyesight. The old man lost his eyesight 10 years ago.
It is essentially a 3D cornea constructed using insoluble synthetic nano tissue. Known as the K-Pro, it is essentially capable of replacing damaged or opaque corneas.
The Israeli company 'CorNeat' (CorNeat) has completed this process. In July last year, the artificial cornea transplant procedure was approved for clinical trials.
It is reported that the thin artificial cornea is placed under the conjunctiva, the thin membrane of the eyelids and the upper part of the eyeball.
Cornit Vision Chief Medical Officer and K-Pro inventor Dr. Gilad Litvin said, 'The surgery was relatively simple and took less than an hour to complete.'
Corneal transplant to restore sight has been done in the past. But that can only be done with a donor cornea. In this case artificial corneal transplantation will bring a breakthrough.
