In a report by The Economist citing Hirofumi Tanada of Waseda University in Japan, the Muslim population in Japan has more than doubled in the last 10 years. According to a 2010 statistic, there were 110,000 Muslims in Japan. However, by the end of 2019, that number has reached 2.3 million.
During this decade, the number of Muslims in the country increased as notable people in Japan converted to Islam. Statistics show that 50,000 Japanese have converted to Islam in the last 10 years.
As the Muslim population continues to grow, more and more mosques, places of worship and halal restaurants are also being established in Japan. Muhammad Tahir Abbas Khan, a professor at Ritsumeikan Asia-Pacific University (APU) and head of the Beppu Muslim Association (BMA), said there are currently 110 mosques in Japan.
Even though the number of mosques is increasing day by day, Muslims living in Japan still have to worry about the grave site. About 99 percent of people in Japan are cremated. However, cremation is prohibited in Islam. In this situation it has become a problem in the country. Abbas Khan also said, "If I die today, I don't even know if I will be buried."
But the BMA has been collecting money for the cemetery for almost a decade. However, after the location for the grave was determined, the locals also opposed it. They say that if there is a cemetery, they will not be able to drink water for sure.
It should be noted that after the Russian Revolution, hundreds of Turkish Muslim immigrants from Russia came to Japan in the 1920s. In 1930, 1000 Muslims from different countries were staying in Japan. Later in the 1980s, when migrant workers from Iran, Pakistan, and Bangladesh migrated to Japan, the Muslim population began to grow there.
