People who take over-the-counter painkillers without a doctor's prescription for headaches have the same risk, according to a recent study.
American researchers conducted a study of nearly 62,000 women and found that those who consumed painkillers twice a week had a 13 percent higher risk of hearing loss than others. Taking ibuprofen 6 times a week increases the risk of deafness by 24 percent. And those who consume paracetamol 6 days a week have a 21 percent risk of deafness.
Studies have shown no increased risk of deafness with aspirin. However, the researchers could not explain why taking these drugs increases the risk of hearing loss.
They observed 116,000 patients registered by the American Nurses Health Study from 1995 to 2016. These women were asked how much paracetamol, ibuprofen or aspirin they had taken. How long have they had hearing problems? It showed that the hearing problems of the women concerned depended on the duration of taking paracetamol and ibuprofen.
