The Dhaka Times Desk A large asteroid will pass very close to Earth on March 21. Its shape is 0.9 kilometers or 0.56 miles wide. This information was given by the US space research agency NASA in a statement.
According to information from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) run by the California Institute of Technology, the asteroid named 2001FO32 will make its closest approach to Earth on that day (March 21). The distance between Earth and the asteroid will be 2 million kilometers or 1.25 million miles.
This asteroid will be five times more than the distance of the Moon from the Earth. Therefore, there is no chance of it colliding with our planet. But approaching it will give astronomers a chance to see a rare object, JPL said.
Paul Chodas, director of the institute's Center for Near Earth Object Studies and researcher, said in the statement that there is no chance that the asteroid would come close to the collision barrier with Earth within 1.25 million miles.
The asteroid will cross Earth at an estimated speed of 124,000 or 77,000 miles per hour. This will be the highest speed of any asteroid passing close to Earth at this time.
JPL also said that no other massive rocks are likely to come close to Earth before 2052. It will then pass 2.8 million kilometers or 1.75 million miles from Earth.
