Wasim was the hero of the golden days of Bengali cinema. Today is no more. On Saturday (April 18) around 12:30 pm, he left for the land of no return. Nayak Wasim was suffering from various diseases related to old age for quite some time. He was born on March 23, 1947.
In the seventies and eighties, Wasim had the monopoly of Dhaka films. His real name is Mezbahuddin Ahmed. He studied at Mymensingh District School. He was also a tukhor player in school. Then he studied at Anandamohan College. While studying in college, he became a bodybuilder. In 1964, he also won the title of 'Mr East Pakistan' for bodybuilding. His reputation spread around then.
Then he was admitted to the history department of Dhaka University. Wasim also earned a master's degree. He was a very popular personality in university life.
Mezbah (Wasim) used to watch Hollywood films regularly during his student life. But he never thought of making a career in acting. He wanted to choose army or police administration as a career.
Mejbah came to FDC one day to see the shooting of 'Ora 11 Jan'. The reason is that Nayak Khusru was his close friend. He was already familiar with hero Sohail Rana from his university days. On that day, Sudarshan Mejbah caught the attention of many directors. But even then he never thought about acting.
About the year 1972. On the shooting sets of the movie 'Chhand Hari Gelo', family friend and famous film director SM Shafi suddenly asked Mejbah to act in a small scene. The hero Razzak has to say a dialogue in English. Mezbah did that scene in one cut that day. Everyone present also praised him.
Since then he often came to FDC. To see firsthand how SM Shafi creates films. Then the director caught the eye of Mohsin. Mezbah got an offer to be the hero of the film 'Raat Par Din'. But he had doubts. Because at that time he received a call from the army. He suddenly decided to act in the movie without informing his family. Then the shooting started. Director Mezbahar changed his name to Wasim. Wasim, a super hit hero of Bengali films, became a household name since then.
In 1973, 'Raat Par Din' was released with great fanfare. After that, he never looked back. Released in 1976, 'The Rain' starring Wasim and directed by SM Shafi was released in 46 countries around the world. The film was a bumper hit.
Wasim was one of the top heroes in Dhaka films from 1973 to 1990. This legendary actor is the hero of more than one and a half hundred super hit films. Except for a handful of films, every film was a super hit.
