The country's health authorities have also issued a new guideline to maximize the number of doses from vaccine bottles by using advanced syringes for medical staff at vaccination centers in the country.
Last Saturday, a day after the start of the country's universal vaccination program, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) said a special model of locally produced syringes has paved the way for increasing the number of vaccine recipients from one to two doses per bottle.
This will be possible with low dead space (LDS) syringes designed to reduce wasted vaccine doses by reducing the space between the needle and plunger.
It was previously estimated that one bottle of the AstraZeneca vaccine was enough to dose 10 people, while Pfizer had 6.
When using these LDS syringes, KDCA believes that one bottle of AstraZeneca vaccine is capable of delivering up to 12 jobs, while Pfizer can deliver up to 7.
An official at the Central Disease Control Headquarters said, “The earlier estimate was based on the type of common syringe. So when we use the LDS model, the number of recipients can also increase.”
Authorities, however, said the actual number of additional recipients may vary depending on the skills of each medical worker.
"Although it can only add up to a few thousand doses now, this number is expected to expand significantly once Pfizer vaccines are delivered," said Chun Yun-mai, a professor at Eva Women's University Medical Center.
