The Dhaka Times Desk Black fungus is at higher risk in patients with Covid-19, especially those with uncontrolled diabetes, requiring steroid therapy, or those on ventilation.
In addition, experts have warned that if a mask is used for a long time, there is a risk of black fungus infection.
India's Hindustan Times, quoting expert doctors, reported that patients are at the highest risk of contracting black fungus within 6 weeks of Covid-19 treatment.
New Delhi's All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) senior neurosurgeon Dr. P Saratchandra said in this regard, 'One of the most important factors is uncontrolled diabetes. Using steroids with the conventional drug tocilizumab increases the risk of black fungus infection. Additionally, patients on ventilation and those requiring oxygen are at increased risk of black fungus infection. If someone needs these within 6 weeks of covid treatment they are at the highest risk of infection.'
He also said, 'Giving cold oxygen directly from the cylinder is very dangerous. High-risk patients may be prescribed the anti-fungal drug posaconazole to prevent black fungus infection.'
He also warned about using the same face mask for a long time and said, 'No mask can be used for a long time. Each N95 mask should be used no more than five times and cloth masks should be washed daily after use. If cloth mask is kept in a damp place, fungus can grow from there.' He advised having a separate mask for each day of the week.
It is to be noted that the central government of India has declared this disease as mucormycosis as an epidemic after the infection of black fungus in states like Rajasthan, Gujarat, Punjab, Haryana, Karnataka, Odisha, Telangana and Tamil Nadu.
