Jeff Bezos' rocket engine maker Blue Origin plans to launch its first manned space flight on July 20. Jeff Bezos himself is taking part in the journey for the first time, accompanied by his younger brother Mark Bezos.
An auction was also held last month to select passengers for a vacant seat on board the New Shepard. The three-phase auction ended last Saturday. The event is live streamed online.
At the time, Blue Origin sales director Ariane Cornell said 7,600 people from 159 countries registered to participate in the auction. This auction is managed by Boston-based RR Auctions. However, the name of the winner of the auction was not revealed.
New Shepard is scheduled to launch next month, July 20, from Blue Origin's own rocket launch facility in South Texas to mark the 52nd anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing.
Jeff Bezos founded Blue Origin in 2000. The company has been experimenting with the 60 feet high New Shepard rocket for a long time. A total of 15 test flights have been conducted since 2015, but none of them were manned.
