The Dhaka Times Desk North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has finally admitted that his country is facing a food crisis. Recently, in a meeting of the senior leaders of his party Workers' Party, he expressed his apprehension about the ongoing crisis.
In the meeting, Kim Jong Un said, 'At present, the food situation in North Korea has reached an alarming state. This situation has arisen because of the damage caused to the agriculture sector due to the cyclone and floods last year.'
It is known that recently the price of food products has increased dramatically in North Korea. The price of a kilogram of banana in the country has reached 45 dollars.
North Korea is under various international sanctions for non-compliance with restrictions related to its nuclear program. That's why the country has only trade permits with a handful of countries including China. Of which North Korea has the most trade with China. North Korea is almost entirely dependent on China for food, fertilizer and fuel.
North Korea has closed the border for more than a year to prevent corona infection. Due to which the country's trade with China has almost stopped.
Several North Korean government officials have told the BBC that they hope to improve relations with the US and South Korea to resolve the ongoing food crisis. However, they did not say anything in detail about this.
