Purkharam, a 42-year-old man, was diagnosed with a rare disease called axis hypersomnia.
According to a report of Times Now News, the name of Ravana's younger brother in Ramayana is Kumbhakarna. He used to sleep continuously for 6 months. A person is generally advised to sleep for 6-8 hours a day. But Purkharam spent up to 25 consecutive days sleeping. He was diagnosed with this rare disease 23 years ago.
Purkharam can run the shop only 5 days a month due to this rare disease. Once he falls asleep, it is difficult to wake him up. At first Purkharam's family tried to treat him. Purkharam used to sleep for 15 hours a day.
However, Purkharam's sleep increased as the day progressed. This sleep passed from hours to days. His condition has deteriorated so much that he now sleeps for up to 25 days at a time. So his family fed Purkharam in his sleep. Bathing is also done in sleep. Purkharam sometimes falls asleep even while working.
Purkharam said, despite the treatment as well as extra sleep, his body is tired most of the time. His performance is almost non-existent. Apart from sleep, Purkharam also said that he has a severe headache. Meanwhile Purkharam's mother Kanbari Devi and his wife Lichmi Devi hope that one day Purkharam will recover and live like a normal person.
