Scientists claim that a place where methane gas is emerging has been identified. Methane gas is often produced by microorganisms as well. Therefore, the discovery of this source of methane gas on the planet indicates the possibility of life there.
Since 2012, NASA's robotic Curiosity rover has been operating in a large crater called Gale Crater on Mars. A part of this rover is measuring the amount of methane gas around the area and has detected methane 6 times. The researchers also think that it has been possible to identify the source of that methane.
According to researchers at the California Institute of Technology, the source of this methane could be just a few dozen miles away from the Curiosity rover.
"This may be the source of methane gas to the west and southwest of the Curiosity rover, located just below the surface of the northwest crater," the researchers said in their paper. But it is a coincidence that the area where the Curiosity rover landed is also a region of active methane gas.'
This new discovery has caused a huge uproar in the scientific community. This is because almost all methane on Earth has biological sources. So this discovery has strengthened the possibility of life in that area of Mars.
