The Dhaka Times Desk Researchers unearthed a fruit basket from the fourth century BC during the study of Thonis-Heraklion, an ancient submerged metropolis in the Gulf of Abu Kir, Egypt. The most incredible thing is that the fruit in that basket is still intact!
Inside the basket were found doom nuts, which are actually the fruit of a type of African palm tree. The ancient Egyptians considered it sacred. Grape seeds are also available.
Oceanographic archaeologist Frantak Godio said nothing in the basket was damaged. Needless to say, the researchers were very surprised to see the intact fruit in that 2400-year-old basket.
These baskets are found in an underground chamber. According to the Greek City Times, the fruits were probably offered as a tribute to the deceased. Next to the baskets is a 197/26 feet 'tumulus' (a type of mound similar to a grave and used for cremation).
All we could see was burnt stuff everywhere, says Godio. A special event was held there. It can be said that the site was closed for hundreds of years, as we have not found anything from the early 4th century BC onwards. But the city survived for hundreds of years after that.
Other artifacts found around the tumulus included ancient vases, various bronze artifacts, and a statue depicting the Egyptian god Osiris. We also found numerous ceramic objects, Godio added. One on top of the other. These were actually imported ceramics.
