On this day of 2004 i.e. August 21, a hellish incident happened. On that day, an infernal grenade attack was launched on the Awami League's anti-terrorist peace rally on Bangabandhu Avenue with the intention of killing the then opposition party leader Sheikh Hasina.
A few top local leaders of Awami League, including Sheikh Hasina, narrowly escaped with their lives in the August 21 attack that day. 24 people were killed in that hellish bomb attack.
In the afternoon of August 21, when Sheikh Hasina was speaking at the rally, Ivy Rahman, wife of the late President Zillur Rahman and Awami League's women's affairs secretary, was fatally injured in the attack. He later died in hospital.
At least 400 others were injured in the attack. Many of the injured are permanently crippled. None of them ever regained their normal lives.
At the last stage of Sheikh Hasina's speech on that day, a sudden grenade explosion caused severe chaos, terrible death and a smoky chaotic atmosphere at the scene. Although this series of grenade attacks was carried out with the intention of killing Sheikh Hasina, the then Mayor of Dhaka City Corporation Mohammad Hanif and Sheikh Hasina's personal bodyguard immediately formed a human circle and sustained the injuries and saved Sheikh Hasina from the hand of the grenade. Later, Sheikh Hasina was taken away by security. Sheikh Hasina survived the grenade attack that day but her hearing was damaged.

Since 2004, the people who have manifested the spirit of the liberation war have been observing the day of grenade attacks on August 21. Today marks the 17th anniversary. Bangladesh Awami League is celebrating the day with due dignity. Like every time, this time also Bangladesh Awami League has taken a domestic program to commemorate the day.
