The Dhaka Times Desk Cyber attacks have been launched on the 'Suraksha' app and web portal, the digital registration system for vaccinations against the corona virus.
Recently, at least 10 countries have attacked this security app simultaneously. This attack is called a 'denial of service attack' or an attack to interrupt the service. Because of that, there is some disruption in the vaccine registration process. However, the skilled Bangladeshi expert team was able to stop the attack by the foreigners.
Hackers failed to take the information of more than 3 crore citizens registered in the 'Suraksha' app as skilled Bangladeshi experts were able to stop the attack. Later, this 'security' registration service was made more secure by introducing geo-fencing and other effective measures.
Sources in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) department said that the 'Suraksha' app was attacked several times after it was launched. Attempts are made to defeat the registration system through system hacks and over-the-top hits. The biggest attack was made on August 12 and 13. At that time the hits were several times more than the capacity of the app. Most of these are done between 10 pm and 12 pm.
The ICT department also said that a total of 6 crore 16 lakh 74 thousand 697 hits were received from 10 countries in 48 hours and 3 crore 32 lakh 99 thousand 135 hits came again on August 14. Hackers from Bangladesh, Hungary, Japan, USA, China, UK, Australia, Malaysia, India and Philippines hit the app. However, when geo-fencing was introduced, the hits decreased significantly.
Bangladesh Computer Council (BCC) Director (CA Operations & Security) Tarek M Barkatullah told the media about the cyber attack on the 'security' service, saying the attack started during the Gantikar campaign. At that time more hits came than we could handle. This caused our users to experience slow system speed and SMS taking time to arrive. But hackers fail to penetrate our security systems. We have resolved the issue. The hit capacity has been increased from 50 thousand to 1 lakh per second.
