The country will present its plan to tackle climate change at an environmental conference starting on October 23. As part of this, there are plans to plant at least 100 million trees in the desert. A project called the Saudi Green Initiative was also announced last March.
The country hopes to agree on carbon emissions to combat global warming at the 26th United Nations Climate Conference, or COP-26, to be held in Glasgow from October 31 to November 12. Metro News has given this information in a report.
Saudi Arabia is a signatory to the Paris Climate Agreement. The country has not yet announced any nationally determined contribution to reducing carbon emissions. Efforts are also underway to keep the global average temperature from rising above pre-industrial levels by 1.5 degrees Celsius.
The United States and the EU want Saudi Arabia to join a global initiative to cut methane emissions by 30 percent by 2030. US climate envoy John Kerry will attend the Middle East's largest green conference on October 25, hosted by Riyadh.
Saudi Arabia has reportedly committed to producing 50 percent of its needs from renewable energy by 2030 and planting billions of trees in the desert. Through this, the country has also pledged to reduce carbon emissions by more than 4 percent of its global contribution.
