The Dhaka Times Desk The World Bank suspended aid to the country after the military coup in Sudan. The anti-coup movement has also strengthened with the support of the common people of the country.
In a BBC report, last March, Sudan received a $2 billion grant from the World Bank. It was the first time in nearly 30 years that the country had received the grant as it was able to repay its debt in full.
However, just when the country was on the path of economic progress after a long period of crisis, a military coup happened again, which pushed the country into crisis again. That is why the World Bank has taken this decision.
World Bank President David Malpass said in a statement from Washington that, “We are very concerned about the current situation in Sudan. We are also apprehensive about the impact this situation may have on the socio-economic revival and development of the country.”
The African Union (AU) has also suspended Sudan's membership in protest at the military's 'unconstitutional' seizure of power. On the other hand, the United States stopped the aid of 700 million dollars to the country.
Such actions against Sudan have put pressure on General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan to restore civilian rule in the country.
Sudan's General Burhan said in a press conference on Tuesday the reason for the coup, the army took power to prevent civil war in the country. However, he assured that there will be democratic elections in the country in 2023.
