This vehicle can run equally on road and rail. Its public exhibition was held last Saturday in Kaiyo, Tokushima Prefecture, Japan.
This DMV bus looks a lot like a minibus. The road also runs on normal rubber tires, but when it reaches the interchange, the steel wheels drop from the bottom of the car onto the rail tracks, turning it into a train carriage. Then the wheels of the train lift the front tires off the track. The rear wheels are down to drive the DMV's on the rails.
It is learned that Asa Coast Railway Company is the manufacturer of this DMV. The company's CEO, Shigeki Miura, said the vehicles could also help small towns like Kaiyo with aging and shrinking populations. Where local transport companies are struggling to make a profit. It is known that these cars, capable of carrying a maximum of 21 passengers, can run at a speed of 60 km/h on railway tracks and about 100 km/h on public roads. These diesel powered DMVs will be available in different colors.
