It is reported that geologists set fire to the crater to prevent the spread of methane gas. It has been burning continuously since that incident in 1971. This crater in the Karakum desert is 69 meters or 226 feet in diameter and its crater is 30 meters or 98 feet long.
According to the news, tourists flock to Darwaja city every year to see this fire face. More than half a million tourists have visited the place since 2009. However, Turkmenistan's President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov is currently seeking to stop it for environmental and health reasons. However, Canadian explorer George Kourounis, who tested the crater's depth in 2013, said that no one really knows how the crater formed. However, local geologists believe that this large crater was formed in the 1960s. However, it started to catch fire in the 1980s.
