The Dhaka Times Desk The Taliban government has issued new guidelines for women in Afghanistan's capital, Kabul. The directive also recommends that women wear hijab.
Yesterday (January 10) local media of Afghanistan Khama News gave this information in a report. In addition to hanging banners across the capital city for women to wear burqas and hijabs, the Taliban issued new directives to motorists across Afghanistan, the report said. In this directive, it is said that no woman can be given a seat in the car if she does not wear hijab.
News agency Khayama Press said the banners and placards calling for women to wear the hijab were first seen in the Afghan capital, Kabul, last Sunday (January 9). This banner also features two images of girls wearing burqas. One of them shows a picture of her wearing a black abaya covering her entire face including her eyes. And in the other, the scene of covering the whole body with a burqa comes up.
The notice on the banner reads, 'According to Sharia law, a Muslim woman must wear hijab'. Because this is the order of Sharia law.'
Officials at Afghanistan's Ministry of Enjoining Good Deeds and Prohibiting Deeds said the purpose of hanging the banners and posters was to encourage women to wear the hijab. However, even if the banner recommends hijab, no one can force women to wear it.
Since coming to power in mid-August last year, the Taliban government has been imposing one after another restrictions on women. Human rights organizations claim that the group's bans are violating women's rights.
After the seizure of power in Kabul, Taliban spokesman Suhail Shaheen said, "During the Taliban era, burqa will not be compulsory for women in Afghanistan." But women should wear hijab while going out.'
Later, a Taliban leader made a controversial comment about women at the beginning of last September. In a video that went viral at the time, she said women not wearing hijab looked like 'sliced watermelons'.
In his words, 'do you buy cut watermelon? Or buy a whole watermelon? Of course he bought the whole thing. Girls who don't wear hijab are 'sliced watermelons'.
It should be noted that after taking power, the Taliban also promised to give full respect to Afghan women. The group even said that women would be given opportunities to study and work. However, as the days go by, the Taliban is starting to revert to its old form.
