After the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank and the United States froze (frozen) a large amount of the country's money held by them. Hussain Haqqani, the former ambassador of Pakistan to the United States, also urged the international regulatory agencies to ensure that the money does not go to the hands of the Taliban.
But a plan to release nearly a billion dollars in Afghanistan's trust fund for education, agriculture, health and family programs has been approved. The approval was given by the World Bank to encourage efforts to alleviate the country's growing humanitarian and economic crisis.
According to Reuters on Friday, the United Nations will give this money to the Afghanistan Reconstruction Trust Fund through the World Bank. However, due to the ban, the Taliban administration cannot use this money on its own. The source said on condition of anonymity that the World Bank board will discuss this on March 1.
In the last few months, $280 million from the same trust fund was successfully distributed to the World Food Program and the United Nations children's agency UNICEF for nutrition and health assistance in Afghanistan. According to the World Bank, as part of the plan, another 1 billion US dollars will be added to the fund's assets in 2022.
As per the target of the plan, 4 installments totaling 600 million dollars will be disbursed and the rest will be allocated for other periods of the year on priority basis. According to the World Bank, the fund aims to protect the vulnerable, preserve human capital and key economic and social institutions, and reduce future humanitarian aid needs.
